Mangaluru, Jun 1: School children hailing from a poor background were distributed free books while students and teachers from DK Zilla Panchayat Higher Primary School in Bengre and Kasba were distributed free identity cards in a programme organised by Karavali Minority Community Fishermen's Primary Cooperative Society at the old port in Bunder here on Saturday.
Mangaluru MLA J R Lobo inaugurated the programme and distributed books to the children.
MUDA president Ibrahim Kodichal participated in the programme and spoke on the occasion. President of the society J Mohammed Isaaq presided over the programme.
In the programme, around 650 children were distributed books worth a total of Rs 2.5 lakh, and cheques worth a total of Rs 60,000 were distributed to patients suffering from Cancer, heart disease and kidney ailments.
On the same Karavali Minority Fishermen's Primary Cooperative Society , employees Habeeb and Joseph D'Souza who had worked for several years in the society were felicitated.
Vice president of the society B Ahmed Bava, director Farooq Bengere, Department of Fisheries deputy director M D Prasad, B K Saleem, Janardhan, M K Venkatesh, Nitin Kumar, M A Gafoor, U T Ahmed Shareef, B Muhammed Swalih, S K Ismail, S M Ibrahim, and others were present on the occasion.
