Mangaluru, Feb 2: With frequent clashes among inmates being reported in the district prison in Mangaluru, the State government has decided to shift the jail to Mudipu, around 25 km away from the city.
DGP (prison) HN Sathyanarayana Rao, who inspected the prison for half an hour and met prisoners earlier in the day told media persons that shifting will take place after a new state-of-the art prison comes up on a 63 acre land in next three to five years.
Mr Rao also hinted that that he would focus on modernizing prisons along with prisons department. As part of this process, the department would conduct series of prison wise workshops that will prop up self-esteem, self-confidence and increase operational efficiency of the prisons department personnel.
"We will rope in experts in the above areas from the government and private sectors for this purpose," he said.
In fact, Rao has sent a detailed circular on the dos and donts to all prisons across Karnataka after taking over. Observing that prison staff is not in sync with reality outside, Rao said while similar workshops have been held in the past, they have not been effective. Warders too will be involved in proposed workshops, he said, adding the workshop will start with basic courses such as those dealing with self-esteem and self-confidence and progress to more professional courses.
The prisons department will work out a syllabus for the entire proposed training, he said, adding the professional courses will include soft-skills trainings, use of modern technology in prison management and also training to deal with criminals of varying kind.
The workshops will be held region or district wise, possibly clubbing prisons staff from adjacent districts such as Udupi and Mangaluru, and Karwar and Belagavi, he said, adding details are being worked out.
