Mangaluru, Apr 4: Several agitators were injured when the cops resorted to the baton charge during a protest organised by the Popular Front of India in Mangaluru against an alleged case of police atrocity on Tuesday.
The police also detained nearly 100 activists when they tried to gherao the office of Mangaluru City Police Commissioner demanding justice to a Muslim youth, who was hospitalised after his arrest.
The protest was staged to exert pressure on the city police commissioner M Chandra Sekhar to take action against the cops responsible for the pathetic condition of Ahmed Qureshi, a resident of Katipalla Kaikamba in Mangaluru taluk.
According to Qureshi’s parents, his one of the kidneys stopped functioning due to the alleged physical torture in the custody by the sleuths of City Crime Branch.
The protesters also demanded immediate release of Qureshi and suspension of the cops who reportedly thrashed him.
Police sources, said that they had to resort to baton charge to bring the situation under control when the PFI activists staged protest without permission. All the detained PFI activists, including a few injured, were taken to Kavoor police station.
