Mangaluru, Oct 15: Rubbishing the claims of Sangh Parivar that Muslim youths indulge in conversion of Hindu girls in the pretext of love in Dakshina Kannada, a senior police officer said that the coastal district is plagued by communal violence and ‘immoral rowdyism’ and that the so called ‘love jihad’ doesn’t even exist.
Dr SD Sharanappa, the superintendent of police of Dakshina Kannada was responding a question posed by the members of the Legislative Committee on Women and Child Development over rumours of ‘love jihad’ during a meeting at Zilla Panchayat Hall in the city.
“Love jihad is a mere a rumour. Not a single case of love jihad is reported from any part of Dakshina Kannada district so far,” the cop clarified.
“I am not even aware of any such incident. No such cases have been registered,” he reiterated.
He also said that rowdy sheets have been opened against the accused involved in 13 separate incidents of immoral rowdyism (also known as moral policing) in the district.
A senior police officer from Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate present in the meeting also admitted that the rumours of ‘love jihad’ are far from the truth.
“As many as 57 cases of missing girls have been registered under the limits of Commissionerate. Among them, 54 girls have been traced,” said Shantaraju, the Deputy Commissioner of Police.
Dr Sharanappa also said that the shortage of personnel has severely affected investigation in to and prosecution of criminal cases, including those against women and children and urged the Committee to prevail upon the government to strengthen the police force in the district.
He revealed that for a population of more than 10 lakh, the district police has a strength of mere 570, an average 57 personnel for one lakh population. This is just about half of the state average of 100 personnel per one lakh population.
He also admitted that the district has been witnessing increasing incidents of communal violence and such other law and order problems.
In such a situation, more number of personnel would help the force to ensure peace in the region. The district police has sought at least 323 additional personnel and the committee should ensure that the government sanctions the demand, he said.
