Mangaluru, Jan 1: Senior IPS officer S Murugan took charge as the Commissioner of Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate on Thursday. His predecessor R Hitendra, who was transferred to the IGP headquarters in Bengaluru, handed over the charge to Murugan at the Office of Police Commissioner, here.
Speaking to media persons after assuming power, he said that he had first hand idea about Mangaluru as he had worked in this region previously in various positions. He however said that he would study the current situation before taking any crucial steps.
Stating that people of Mangaluru want to live in peace, he said that he would emphasize on maintaining peace and communal harmony and take stringent action against those who attempt to disturb peace in the society.
He also said that people of Mangaluru should think why their city bears'communal' tag and try to remove it by upholding peace and communal harmony. He also said that police will fulfill its responsibility in curbing communal activities and take steps to establish harmony.
Praising the tree previous Police Commissioners of Mangaluru Seemanth Kumar Singh, Manish Karbeekar and R Hithendra, he said that he would take forward the good services rendered by them during their tenure.
Replying to a query on recent communal clashes in Mangaluru, he said that police will not hesitate to take action against those who instigate riot, provoke people and spread hatred. œWe will also look into the look into the social media aspect of it to ensure that it is not used to disrupt peace," he said.
