Mangaluru Rahul makes international Test debut in Melbourne

December 27, 2014

Melbourne, Dec 27: K L Rahul from Mangaluru became the second Indian player to make a Test debut on this tour after the 22-year-old was included in the starting 11 for the Boxing Day Test here on Friday.

Earlier, Karn Sharma made his debut in the first Test at Adelaide.

The indications were apparent during India's two practice sessions ahead of the third Test although India, as is their wont, kept things under wraps until the last minute. Rahul was having extended bat in the œnets and was often seen being counselled by Team Director Ravi Shastri and coach Duncan Fletcher.

While the suspense was whether Rahul would replace Shikhar Dhawan, the team management chose to axe an out-of-sorts Rohit Sharma to accommodate the Karnataka batsman. This means, Rahul would be batting at No 6 instead of his regular opening slot that he has made his own in the State side.

While he would have preferred to bat at the top of the order, Rahul should take inspiration from his more illustrious State-mate Rahul Dravid, who batted at No 7 on his debut in 1996 instead of his customary No 3 and scored 95.

And not unlike Dravid, who was handed his Test cap at the fabled Lord's, the younger Rahul makes his debut at another iconic venue the Melbourne Cricket Ground. That skipper M S Dhoni handed over the cap would have made the moment that much more special for the youngster.

Rahul, who had top-scored with 1033 runs in Karnataka's triumphant Ranji campaign, was on the selectors' radar and convinced them of his credentials with back-to-back centuries (185, 130) in the Duleep Trophy final for South Zone against Central.

The comparisons with Dravid are going to tail Rahul not just because he shares the same name and plays for the same State but also because he is rated to come as good as the former India captain. While it's a huge compliment Rahul also realises the enormity of the responsibility. œIt (the comparison) makes me happy for a while but then it's a big responsibility as well, Rahul had told Deccan Herald in an interview.

œYou know when people are comparing you to Rahul Dravid, they also expect you to match the standards he has set. They want someone from Karnataka to go and play like him; make it as big and make the State proud. On my part, I make sure I work hard and try to learn from him; try and match the work ethics he followed, he had remarked.

With great work ethic and a mature head on his shoulders, there is no reason why the right-hander shouldn't make it as big

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.
