Mangaluru, Dec 13: The foundation stone laying ceremony for the proposed Maulana Azad Bhavan in the city on Saturday was marred by the protest staged by the Sangh Parivar activists along with the students of a private English Media School, run by Kerala Samajam, which had planned to take over a government land.

It is learnt that the school management had asked the students to stage protest and not allow the elected representatives and officials to lay foundation stone for the proposed building.

The government had earlier this year decided to build Maulana Azad Bhavan in all district head quarters including Mangaluru and released Rs 1 crore each. The Bhavan is expected to house the offices of the Minorities Welfare Department, Karnataka State Minorities Commission, Wakf office and district information centre to provide information on all the programmes meant for the welfare of the minorities.

The district administration had formally handed over a 16 cents land at Pandeshwar to Wakf Board for the construction of the proposed Bhavan.

Around 9 a.m. on Saturday District In-charge Minister B Ramanath Rai, Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo, MLC Ivan D'Souza, Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim and others reached the spot for the scheduled event.

Meanwhile, a group of Sangh Parivar activists and students of private school began to raise slogans against the elected representatives and Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim. The uniform-clad students occupied the ground and began to play.

Police rushed to the spot to prevent any untoward incidents. City Police Commissioner R Hithendra requested the school management not to misguide the students and send them to classrooms, but in vain.

Local corporator Diwakar also extended support to the agitators saying that the vacant land should be converted into a full-fledged play ground for school children and local youth instead of constructing Maulana Azad Bhavan on it.

He also criticized Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim for giving green signal to build Bhavan on the land which was being used as playground. œThe district administration should immediately withdraw the land handed over to Wakf Board and make it a full-fledged playground for the school children and local youth, who do not have any other suitable place to play in the locality, he said.

One of the teachers of the Kerala Samajam English Medium School said that if the Bhavan was built the students will lose their only playground.

œOur students have been playing in this ground for nearly three decades. However district administration has now cheated the children by handing over the land to Wakf Board, she said adding that the school management had also submitted a memorandum to deputy commissioner urging him to handover the land to the Kerala Samajam.

Sources from DC office said that the land belonged to the revenue department and was reserved to build its staff quarters. However, the land had officially been handed over to the Wakf Board to build Azad Bhavan in October this year.

Kerala Samajam, Mangaluru, is an organization of Keralites living in Mangaluru. It is running an English medium School starts from LKG to PUC and a commercial building city with a conference hall in the city.

Mangaluru, Dec 16: The Mangaluru City police have significantly escalated their campaign against drug trafficking, arresting 25 individuals and booking 12 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act between November 30 and December 13. The crackdown resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of illicit substances, including 685.6 grams of MDMA and 1.5 kg of ganja.

The success of this recent drive has been significantly boosted by the city’s innovative, QR code-based anonymous reporting system.

"The anonymous reporting system has received an encouraging response. Several recent arrests were made based on inputs received through this system, helping police tighten the noose around drug peddlers," said the City Police Commissioner.

The latest arrests contribute to a robust year-to-date record, underscoring the police's relentless commitment to combating the drug menace.

Up to December 14 this year, the police have registered a total of 107 cases of drug peddling, leading to the arrest of 219 peddlers. Furthermore, they have booked 562 cases of drug consumption, resulting in the arrest of 671 individuals.

The scale of the seizure for the year reflects the magnitude of the problem being tackled: police have seized 320.6 kg of ganja worth ₹88.7 lakh and 1.4 kg of MDMA valued at ₹1.2 crore. Other significant seizures include hydro-weed ganja worth ₹94.7 lakh and cocaine worth ₹1.9 lakh, among others.

The Commissioner emphasized a policy of rigorous enforcement: "We ensure that peddlers are caught red-handed so that they cannot later dispute the case or claim innocence."

To counter the rising trend of substance abuse among youth, the Mangaluru City police have rolled out uniform guidelines for random drug testing across educational institutions.

As part of the drive, tests were conducted in approximately 100 institutions, screening an estimated 5,500 to 6,000 students in the first phase. 20 students tested positive for drug consumption during the initial screening.

Students who tested positive have been provided counselling and are scheduled for re-testing in the second quarter. The testing will also be expanded to students not covered in the first phase. In a move to ensure strict implementation, police personnel were deployed in mufti in some institutions. Reiterating a zero-tolerance stance, the Commissioner confirmed that random testing will continue, and colleges have also been instructed to conduct drug tests at the time of admission to deter substance abuse from an early stage.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
