Mangaluru, Oct 2: Rather than looking at the Smart City proposal for Mangaluru solely as an obligatory task, the Smart City challenge should be a catalyst for full-fledged development and growth of agriculture, tourism, fisheries, IT sector, health sector, education sector, industries and employment sector in the coastal city, observed Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo.

Presiding over a meeting of MCC officials and members of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and other small-scale industries convened to discuss proposals for the 'Smart City Mangaluru' Challenge held on Thursday, he said that the proposal should envision Mangaluru as an inclusive global city which will be economically, socially, environmentally and culturally sustainable.

"After considering all suggestions from citizens and other stakeholders towards converting Mangaluru into an inclusive global city, a comprehensive proposal will be put together with feedback from several fronts. If our concept of Smart City is considered as the best, then the city could be selected as one of the 20 'Smart Cities' in the first Phase," he told the gathering.

He said that the proposal should focus on Unique Selling Points (USPs) of Mangalore such as an established port, fisheries sector, beach tourism, higher education hub and health care sector.

Briefing the gathering on the Smart City challenge with a presentation, Mr Dharmaraj said that the proposal should envisage a road map for Mangaluru as a Smart City by 2025 with an action plan for 2015-2020. To invite proposals that stress on infrastructure and economic growth for all sections of the society in Mangaluru, there should be maximum citizen participation. With its intellectual capital and high potential for developing all types of economic growth centres, this city is an ideal city to be established as a global city, while retaining its social and cultural identity, he said.

The discussion drew varied suggestions from a few stakeholders such as implementation of solar power in government buildings, public parking facilities, proper water management, separate solid waste management for plastic waste, full-fledged connectivity to the airport, expressway to major connectivity hubs, introduction of adventure and beach tourism, underground cables, introduction of digital displays for advertisements, digital metres to pay penalty for traffic violations, parks in each ward under Mangaluru City Corporation and others.

Citizens are invited to share their Vision Statement for 'Smart City Mangaluru' in a maximum of 50 words and submit it by October 5. The top selected vision statement will win a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh and a certificate.

Entries should be sent along with contact details to [email protected] or by logging in at www.mygov.in. Entries can also be dropped in the drop boxes kept at Mangaluru City Corporation office.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
