Mangaluru, Jul 22: M C Abbas, a social activist and former additional personal secretary of a former union minister, died on Tuesday in Mangaluru hours after he was injured in a road accident.
The driver of an auto-rickshaw, which was moving towards Central Railway Station applied breaks all of a sudden when a customer signaled him to stop.
Meanwhile a two wheeler rider lost control over his vehicle and rammed into auto-rickshaw and then knocked Abbas down.
Abbas was rushed to a private hospital immediately as he sustained severe injuries in the accident and lost conscious. He was admitted to the intensive care unit. However he breathes his last at around 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
Police sources said that carelessness of rickshaw driver, who applied breaks all of a sudden led to the mishap. A case has been registered at Mangaluru East Police Station.
Abbas was known for his social activities and promotion of Arabic language in Mangaluru. He was a personal secretary of P M Saeed, when the latter was a deputy speaker and minister. And, hence he spent around 10 years in New Delhi.
He was also the founder of an Arabic Academy in Mangaluru. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
