Mangaluru, Jul 9: As many as 16 passengers were injured, a few of them critically, when a private bus plunged off the road into a ditch near Kateel on the outskirts of the city on Thursday.
The incident took place when the driver of the Kinnigoli bound bus lost control over his vehicle while negotiating a curve at Ballana near Kateel.
When the bus veered to the extreme left the mud on the side of the road gave way which led to the tragedy.
Soon after the accident took place, the driver came out of the bus and fled the spot as passengers began to blame him.
Police and locals helped the injured passengers and shifted them to hospital. Among 16 injured 11 were admitted to a hospital in Kinnigoli and five others were admitted to another hospital in Mukka.
Fisheries minister Abhaychandra Jain visited the hospital and took stock of the situation. Most of the injured had boarded the bus in BC Road.
