Mangaluru, Nov 14: A clash erupted on the sea off the coast of Ullal, on the outskirts of the city between two groups of fishermen belonging to different communities, when a few suspects in a case jumped into the Arabian Sea to evade arrest on Saturday.

Ironically, those who tried to catch the miscreants in the sea, also were caught by police on charge of attacking the youths who tried to escape.
A tense situation prevailed in Mogaveerapatna village under the limits of Ullal Police Station, after rumours began to spread that fishermen from Kudroli attacked the villagers in the sea.
It all started when a team of police led by Sub Inspector Bharathi visited Mogaveerapatna village to inquire a few suspects in connection with the sword attack on Iqbal, a Muslim youth occurred in the previous night in the area.
When the police approached them, a five youths jumped into sea and started swimming. It is learnt that all of them were fishermen. However, after sometime they were countered in the sea by another group of fishermen, who were in a boat.
According to sources, the fishermen on board the boat, who reportedly hailed from Kudroli, tried to catch the youths. Meanwhile, a clash erupted and the Kudroli fishermen reportedly attacked them with wooden sticks.
Meanwhile, coast guard police intervened and took the fishermen on board the boat into custody on charge of attacking the suspects.
On the other hand residents of Mogaveerapatna staged a protest against police and accused them of harassing innocent youths from the village in the name of investigation.
