Mangaluru, Apr 4: As many as eleven cops including two senior officers reportedly suffered injuries during a protest staged by the Popular Front of India in front of the office of the Mangaluru City Police Commissioner on Tuesday.

The injured include Mangaluru Central ACP Uday Nayak, Mangaluru South ACP Shruti and inspector Beliappa. The police claimed that the protesters pelted stones towards them when the former tried to bring the situation under control.
The police also said that they resorted to lathi-charge after protesters started pelting stones and threatened to storm into the commissioner’s office.
Several PFI activists also suffered severe injuries during the lathi-charge. The violence took place when the PFI activists tried to gherao the city police chief’s office in protest against alleged atrocity against a Muslim youth in the city. Over 100 PFI activists were detained during the protest.
Ahmed Qureshi, a resident of Katipalla Kaikamba in Mangaluru taluk, has been admitted to a hospital in the city after he was detained by the sleuths of City Crime Branch. Qureshi’s family members claimed that one of the kidneys of the former stopped functioning due to the physical torture by the cops in the custody.
