Mangaluru, Apr 7: Under the aegis of Forum Against Atrocities on Women (FAAW), activists and women dressed in black held a silent protest condemning the district administration and police department in failing to curb incidents of ‘immoral policing’ and violence against women in the district.
Gathering on the footpath next to Nehru Maidan here on Tuesday, the demonstrators held placards and expressed their intolerance towards moral policing and increasing crimes against women.
Speaking on the occasion, one of the activists said that the police did not take action against the vigilante groups but the young boys and girls brought in by the groups were detained by the police.
No person or organisation has the right to control or curb the movement of youngsters outside of their homes. Neither is moral policing a part of ancient culture or traditions, she said, adding that the protest was a show of intolerance to such offences, she said.
Another activist said that close to 40 incidents of immoral policing had occurred in various parts of the district. If not checked, the number will continue to rise, she said.
Activists such as Gulabi Bilimale, Shahnaz M, Vidya Dinker and others including students participated in the protest.
