The ‘rasta roko’ was organised under the banner of ‘Nethravati Nadi Samrakshana Okkoota’ to exert pressure on the state government to stop the Yettinahole (Nethravati) river diversion project from implementation.

Irrespective of caste, creed and religion, various like-minded organisations such as Sahyadri Sanchaya, Mangaluru, Jeevanadi Nethravati Horata Samiti, Mangaluru, Tulu Rakshana Vedike, Mangaluru, All College Students’ Assocation, Mangaluru, Nethravati Nadi Samrakshana Vedike, Bantwal, Kannada Rakshana Vedike, Mangaluru, and Swaroopa Research Centrecame together and participated in the ‘rasta roko’ programme, to offer their full-fledged support in opposing the Yettinahole project.

Organisations offer solidarity to 'rasta roko'

Several other organisations such as Christian Youth Association, Mangaluru Bar Assocation, Muslim Central Committee, Dakshina Kannada, DK unit of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, DK unit of Janata Dal (Secular), Dalit Sangharsha Samiti, Dakshina Kannada, DK unit of Akhila Bharata Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), district units of Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad, People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), Dakshina Kannada, Dakshina Kannada Journalists Union, the district unit of Taximen and Maxicab Association, the local units of fishermen’s association and tailors association and others were also a part of the ‘rasta roko’ to show their solidarity towards the cause of saving Nethravati river and Western Ghats.

Addressing the protestors, convenor of Nethravati Nadi Samrakshana Okkoota Dr Niranjan Rai said that the government had submitted an affidavit in the National Green Tribunal that the people of Dakshina Kannada had no right to the water from Nethravati river. The government is trying to force on people in the state that there is excess of water in Nethravati river throughout the year. It should not mislead the people by making false statements, he said, adding that the struggle would continue till the project was shelved.

He said that it was saddening that some elected representatives were a part of the injustice meted out to people in the district. While the respective local MLAs supported the farmers in the Kalasa-Banduri issue, the MLAs of Dakshina Kannada do not have the courtesy to heed the concerns of the people here. Since the government is taking the opposition lightly, the agitation has to continue to stop the project, he stressed.

Former MLA and activist Vijayakumar Shetty said that ever since the Nethravati river diversion project was proposed in 2011, different chief ministers in power including B S Yeddyurappa, Jagadish Shettar and Siddaramaiah had assured that the project would not be implemented without the people’s consent. “I am very disappointed in the present government, which is negligent about the concerns facing the people in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. Even after a resolution has been passed in the Mangaluru City Corporation and Zilla Panchayat against the project, the government in power has not heeded the demands of the people, he criticised.

Representatives from the Bishops House Fr William Menezes and Fr J B Crasta, Gurudevananda Swamiji of Odiyoor Mutt, Bantwal, Esha Vittaladas Swamiji of Kemaru Sandipani Mutt, Moodbidri, Rajashekharananda Swamiji of Vajradehi Mutt, Gurupura, Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo, Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Capt Ganesh Karnik, Dr Annaiah Kulal, S P Chengappa of Mangaluru Bar Association, Bhaskar Rao of Kaveri Horata Samiti, Ajith Kumar Malady, Dinesh Holla, former Mayor K Ashraf and several others participated in the protest.

Proclaiming his support to the agitation, Gurudevananda Swamiji of Odiyoor Mutt said that the pontiffs of several mutts would hold a joint deliberation along with the participation of other like-minded organisations in this regard.

Esha Vittaladas Swamiji, Rajashekharananda Swamiji, activist M G Hegde, Rafeeuddin Kudroli from UNIWEF, advocate Dinakar Shetty, Jeetendra Kottary and others also proclaimed their support to the agitation against Yettinahole protest.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru, Dec 16: The Mangaluru City police have significantly escalated their campaign against drug trafficking, arresting 25 individuals and booking 12 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act between November 30 and December 13. The crackdown resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of illicit substances, including 685.6 grams of MDMA and 1.5 kg of ganja.

The success of this recent drive has been significantly boosted by the city’s innovative, QR code-based anonymous reporting system.

"The anonymous reporting system has received an encouraging response. Several recent arrests were made based on inputs received through this system, helping police tighten the noose around drug peddlers," said the City Police Commissioner.

The latest arrests contribute to a robust year-to-date record, underscoring the police's relentless commitment to combating the drug menace.

Up to December 14 this year, the police have registered a total of 107 cases of drug peddling, leading to the arrest of 219 peddlers. Furthermore, they have booked 562 cases of drug consumption, resulting in the arrest of 671 individuals.

The scale of the seizure for the year reflects the magnitude of the problem being tackled: police have seized 320.6 kg of ganja worth ₹88.7 lakh and 1.4 kg of MDMA valued at ₹1.2 crore. Other significant seizures include hydro-weed ganja worth ₹94.7 lakh and cocaine worth ₹1.9 lakh, among others.

The Commissioner emphasized a policy of rigorous enforcement: "We ensure that peddlers are caught red-handed so that they cannot later dispute the case or claim innocence."

To counter the rising trend of substance abuse among youth, the Mangaluru City police have rolled out uniform guidelines for random drug testing across educational institutions.

As part of the drive, tests were conducted in approximately 100 institutions, screening an estimated 5,500 to 6,000 students in the first phase. 20 students tested positive for drug consumption during the initial screening.

Students who tested positive have been provided counselling and are scheduled for re-testing in the second quarter. The testing will also be expanded to students not covered in the first phase. In a move to ensure strict implementation, police personnel were deployed in mufti in some institutions. Reiterating a zero-tolerance stance, the Commissioner confirmed that random testing will continue, and colleges have also been instructed to conduct drug tests at the time of admission to deter substance abuse from an early stage.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
