The incident has shocked the residents of Sakleshpur.
It is said that four masked men gained entry into the house of Fr Vincent D'Souza by removing the roof tiles. Fr D'Souza and his grandmother Ellubai were asleep at the time of robbery.
The priest was attacked by the miscreants when he woke up hearing the noise. The priest who struggled to free himself from their clutches tried to remove the mask of one of the persons, and received injuries on his arms and fingers.
They tied D'Souza and Ellubai, and snatched a 20 gm gold chain from the priest. Later, they ransacked the house and escaped with a cash amount of Rs 90,000 at around 3 am.Speaking to Deccan Herald, D'Souza said all the miscreants were youths and that it was impossible to identify them, as all were wearing masks.
Inspector K T Gururaj, PSI Jeevan, Bharatgowda and staff visited the spot at 3.30 am. Fingerprint experts and sniffer dogs were pressed into service.
The news of dacoity spread like wildfire and hundreds of people belonging to Christian community and other residents gathered at the Church premises and enquired about the health of Fr D'Souza.
