Mangalore, Jun 18: A massive fire gutted goods worth crores of rupees in a plywood manufacturing unit in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kananda district on Wednesday.
The ill-fated factory located at Sajipa Munnur village is owned by one Abdul Kareem from Thalemogaru.
The fire which was noticed at around 4:00 a.m. by local residents completely devastated the factory within few hours.
Though no loss to human life was reported, goods, furniture and raw materials were destroyed. It is said that the mishap caused losses of around Rs 2.5 crore to the owner.
Initially local residents made a futile attempt to douse the fire. Later, three fire tenders from Bantwal, Pandeshwar and Kadri fire station were pressed to action. Water tankers were also brought in to douse the flames. The fire was brought under control in the evening.
It is learnt that Abdul Kareem had renovated the factory six months ago after borrowing heavy loan from a bank. A few years ago another plywood factory owned by Abdul Kareem at Sajipa Nadu Grama also was destroyed in a similar fire mishap.
Bantwal tahsildar Mallesh, who arrived at the spot assured of assistance to Abdul Kareem.
Locals suspect that a short-circuit could be behind the mishap. An investigation has been ordered into the incident.
