Mangalore, May 13: Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation Mahabala Marla said that one of his topmost priorities was to ensure basic facilities to the five lakh citizens living in the city, including the floating population of around 2 lakh, as well as complete computerisation of all major sections functioning under the city corporation by the end of his term as the mayor.

Interacting with mediapersons at Meet the Press' programme organised by Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists Union (DKWJU) here on Tuesday, he said that the computerisation of the major office works would bring in efficiency and transparency in the working of the city corporation.

Plan to monitor drinking water supply

Speaking on the supply of drinking water to the city and its people, he said that the water supply would be monitored to check the distribution of water to industries, commercial buildings and individual households, towards maintaining adequate water supply for all sections. Digital metres will be compulsorily brought into effect for water connections in use by industries, commercial and residential complexes in the MCC limits. In the same direction, water adalats' (courts) will be initiated in June to resolve disputes related to drinking water connections to households, he said.

In this regard, Mr Marla said that the Thumbay vented dam was likely to be completed by 2015. However, there is no water problem in the district that demands the immediate solution of providing drinking water, he said.

Tackling malaria in Mangalore

To tackle the problem of malaria in Mangalore city, Mr Marla said that the 60 wards under MCC would be grouped into five zones, and the MCC would work along with the cooperation of five medical colleges in the city to implement certain measures to bring the disease under control. Each of the five colleges – Kasturba Medical College, A J Institute and Research Centre, Fr Muller Charitable Institution, K S Hegde Charitable Institution and Shrinivas Medical College – will help in implementing the measures in the five zones, he said.

Junctions, drainages, pavements to be developed

Work will be undertaken to scientifically develop the major junctions of the city such as Kankanady Circle, Ambedkar Circle, Mallikatte Circle, Bunts Hostel Circle, PVS Circle and Navabharat Circle as per the master plan to ease the flow of traffic, he said.

The mayor said that greater importance would be given to the construction of proper drainage system in the system, along with footpaths and pavements on the sides of the concretised roads, for which the works had been incomplete till date.

A complete advertisement policy will be brought into effect by the MCC under which additional bye-laws will be formed to monitor and check the erection of advertisements, hoarding and banners in the streets, which can generate more revenue for the city corporation, he said.

He also said that suitable spots would be identified across the city to encourage and promote greenery and beautification of the city.

President of the union P B Harish Rai welcomed the gathering.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
