Mangalore, May 20: Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation Mahabarla Marla and deputy mayor Kavitha were felicitated in a programme organised by Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Mangalore on Monday.

Speaking after the felicitation, Mr Marla said that proper planning should be done in order to make Mangalore into a clean and greener city. “I have spoken to the officials of forest department, horticulture department and the city planning committees and taken initial steps in this direction. A survey of the city is being conducted and steps will be taken to resolve the issues systematically. If proper guidelines are given by people, proper efforts can be made by involving large number of citizens in the surroundings,” he said, assuring of constructing footpaths and storm water drainages among other projects in the city.

He said that paper-less corporation would go a long way in reducing the congestion of works pending under the city corporation. He further said that the cooperation of people was required to check the spread of vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue.

A memorandum was handed over to the mayor by KCCI president Mohammed Ameen detailing issues that required attention and appropriate action such as the problem of 100 percent solid waste management, construction of footpaths for pedestrians and underground drainages, review of self-assessment scheme, shortage of drinking water in the city and water shed management, improvement of Nehru Maidan, development of IT projects in Dakshina Kannada, setting up a full-fledged tourism office in the city and development of the Old Mangalore Port.

Mr Ameen welcomed the gathering, while KCCI secretary Rammohan Pai Maroor proposed a vote of thanks.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
