Mangaluru, Sep 18: Two notorious conmen have been arrested by Mangaluru Police for allegedly running a MBBS admission racket in this educational hub of South India. The police also managed to recover Rs 37.50 lakh from them.

The accused, identified as Sanjeeva Kumar R, 45, from Tamil Nadu and B C Thimmaiah, 34, from Kodagu, were arrested after seven complaints were lodged against them at Ullal police station. Thimmaiah was earlier working at a private medical college as a co-ordinator and was terminated recently. Sanjeev Kumar was running an education consultancy in Tamil Nadu and he lured students assuring them of seats in prestigious medical colleges.
Managluru City Police Commissioner M Chanadra Sekhar said the duo gave parents false information about the admission rules of medical colleges and promised to secure seats in those institutions for their children.
According to the FIRs, the duo have duped people of Rs 1.27 crore. Police suspect that nine more persons have been duped in a similar way and they are yet to approach police. The total amount in 16 cases could be as high as Rs 2.82 crore, said police.
Mr Sekhar said that the accused used to bring aspirants to education institution campus and showed them around. Once the aspirants and their parents were convinced, they demanded about Rs 25 lakh to Rs 30 lakh from them for a seat. After payment, they would go untraceable, switching off their cell phones.
The modus operandi was unravelled when seven victims filed cases at Ullal police station, two weeks ago. Police, who started the investigation arrested the duo.
When asked that few medical/nursing/management institutions themselves appointed such touts on commission basis for getting candidates to campus and this could be one of the reason for fraudsters to thrive, top cop said if the investigation proves that even education institutions are involved in the scam, they too, will be booked.
Police also warned public not to give heed to such fraudsters, who promise seats in educational institutions. They also asked public to report them about such scamsters or provide details via call, email and city police app.
