Mangalore, Oct 8: Protesting BJP-led union government's apathy in continuing the subsidy, hundreds of employees of Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers (MCF), the lone chemical fertilizer manufacturer in Karnataka, staged a demonstration in the city.
The employees took out the march from Tagore Park in the city to the Deputy Commissioner's office on Tuesday under the banner of MCF Mangala Workers' Union.
Later they submitted a memorandum to the government urging continuation of the present subsidy system until the Union government can make gas available to the unit.
Union president K.N. Suryanarayana in the memorandum said that besides affecting livelihood of employees, production stoppage would put farmers in Karnataka into hardship as the popular œMangala brand of urea would not be available. The product had become popular among farmers, he noted.
The Union regretted the apathy by the Union government as the unit had to be closed down for no fault of its. Employees are deeply agitated and anguished over the prevailing uncertainty, he said.
