Mangalore, May 24: Minister for Public Works H C Mahadevappa and Health Minister U T Khader laid the foundation stone for the widening of Ullal-Mani highway in a simple ceremony at Thokkottu on the outskirts of the city on Saturday.
Speaking to reporters after laying the foundation stone at Thokkottu, Mr Mahadevappa said that widening and asphaltation work on a stretch of 15 kilometres on the 26-km Ullal-Mani at a cost of would begin shortly. A total sum of Rs 6.5 crore, including a grant of Rs 5 crore from the Union government and Rs 1.5 crore sanctioned by the state government, will shortly be released for this purpose, he informed.
The minister said that the stretch of road would be widened by one metre on each side of the road, and asphaltation would be done temporarily. Further widening of the road will be done in the future, after a survey is conducted to check the feasibility of four-laning of the stretch, he said.
He also said that seven bus-stands as well as Kuthar, Natekal and Assaigoli junctions on the Ullal-Mani highway would be upgraded, along with the upgradation of the stretch.
Ullal-Mastikatte stretch to be upgraded
The public works minister inspected the works on the Ullal-Mastikatte road and informed that the upgradation of the road had been undertaken at a cost of Rs 2.5 crores. Out of the 900-metre stretch, 400 metres would be concretised while the remaining stretch would be asphalted.
Mangalore South MLA and Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim were present, along with U T Khader during the inspection of road works.
