Mangalore, Dec 27: After the Janata Darshan programmes held by the district administration at taluk-levels at Belthangady on October 29 and Bantwal on November 12, the programme held at Suratkal on Saturday saw a sheer lack of proper arrangements or system to receive applications from people seeking facilities from the government for their problems.

The'Janata Darshan' programme which was slated to be presided by Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai on Saturday to address the grievances of people in several wards under Mangaluru City Corporation, was held in the absence of the minister and other top-level government officials such as urban development minister Vinay Kumar Sorake, Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Mangaluru Mayor Mahabala Marla, deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim, DK zilla panchayat CEO Tulasi Maddineni and others.
The programme that was held at Hotel Lalith International at Suratkal with the intention of receiving applications and addressing the problems of people in 23 wards of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) coming under Mangaluru North constituency, was merely limited to distributing provisions and facilities to beneficiaries under various government schemes.
There were no counters arranged at the venue for people to submit applications seeking regularisation of land under Akrama-Sakrama scheme, title deeds of sites or financial assistance under various schemes.
Rajya Sabha MP Oscar Fernandes inaugurated the programme two hours later than scheduled, in the presence of few corporators of different wards.
In his lengthy introductory address, Mangaluru North MLA Mohideen Bawa promised to seek grants from the state government for the development of temples, masjids and churches in his constituency.
He also promised that the major companies in his constituency such as MRPL and BASF Chemicals Ltd would utilise their corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds for the development of local wards.
In the programme, a total of 300 beneficiaries were given title deeds to sites, while new ration cards were distributed to 200 BPL (below poverty level) families. Facilities such as health cover under Arogya Bhagya scheme, "adesha patra" for 250 beneficiaries, auto-rickshaws, wheelchairs for disabled persons and financial assistance for widows were distributed in the programme under various government schemes.
