Mangaluru, Dec 20: A group of Sangh Parivar activists waylaid a vehicle transporting a male calf in Maladi village near Punjalkatte in Belthangady taluk of Dakshina Kannada district and assaulted a person in the vehicle.
Local youths identified as Honnaiah, Hariprasad and Praveen were arrested by the police in Punjalkatte for the attack, and later released them on bail.
It is said that a person named Abdul Khader from Manjalapalke in Kukkala village had purchased a male calf from a woman in Oorla in Maladi village near Punjalkatte and was transporting it to his home in his vehicle on Thursday night when a group of eight men waylaid the vehicle and began assaulting him with sticks.
At this time, nearly 200 people from two different communities gathered at the scene, before the police arrived and brought the situation under control.
The police took custody of the vehicle and the calf and arrested both the ones transporting the vehicle and three of the assaulters.
During interrogation, Abdul Khader said that he had purchased the calf with the intention of nurturing it at home.
The arrested assaulters were booked on charges of assault under IPC Section 324 and registered a case. They were later released on bail.
Meanwhile, a group of Sangh Parivar activists gathered in front of the police station alleging that the police had arrested œinnocents on false charges. Former vice president of gram panchayat Tungappa Bangera arrived at the station and held talks with people from both the sides.
The situation subsided following mutual talks at the police station.
