MLAs give Khader a tongue-lashing over rising dengue cases in State

Bengaluru: Jul 17: MLAs cutting across party lines on Thursday gave Health Minister U T Khader a dressing-down for not doing enough to check the rising dengue cases and shortage of medical doctors in the State.

The legislators vented their ire on the minister for not doing enough to prevent the spread of dengue. While poor patients are queuing up in front of government hospitals for treatment, private hospitals are fleecing people in cities and towns, including Bengaluru. A patient has to spend a minimum Rs 14,000 to get treatment in private hospitals, the BJP’s S Suresh Kumar (Rajajinagar) said.

K R Ramesh Kumar of the Congress (Srinivaspur) said there was such a big rush of dengue patients in rural areas that government hospitals were unable to accommodate them due to shortage of beds. “Treatment for dengue fever is very expensive. The poor patients are badly hit. The Health and Family Welfare Department has not taken any measure to control it. The department blames urban local bodies for dengue cases in urban areas. The first thing the department should understand is that mosquitoes do not have any jurisdiction,” he said.

The minister intervened and said that so far there had been only one confirmed case of dengue death in the State. There are three more suspected dengue deaths. Of the total 12,201 suspected cases, 1,586 are confirmed dengue cases. He also claimed that steps were being taken to prevent breeding of mosquitoes that cause dengue. The members took exception to the minister and slammed him for defending the department.

Ramesh Kumar said the officials were misleading the minister and that the statistics given by the minister were wrong. “Dengue is wreaking havoc in the State, but the minister argues that the number of cases is less compared to last year. Nobody is bothered about your numbers. The officials (Health Department) will not have been so callous had they seen their near and dear ones die,” he said.

K Gopalaiah of the JD (S) (Mahalakshmi Layout) said the BBMP was doing nothing to control dengue. “The BBMP officials are using water to fumigate neighbourhoods in the absence of prescribed chemicals. I have purchased the chemical spending money from my pocket in my constituency. I am ready to take you (Khader) to the worst-affected places in my constituency,” he said.

BJP Dr C N Ashwath Narayan (Malleswaram) said breeding of mosquitoes cannot be controlled unless spraying was done at regular intervals. Neither the BBMP nor the Health Department is scientifically dealing with the issue. The system of reporting dengue cases is also faulty, he said.

Earlier, the MLA pulled up Khader over shortage of medical doctors in government hospitals. The members, many of whom are Congress MLAs, demanded that the services of contract doctors be continued and the process to transfer them abandoned. “It appears that he (Khader) is helpless. He may not be able to take independent decisions. He (Khader) may say yes (to the members’ demands), but the person sitting here has to sanction,” he stated pointing at Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s chair.

Mangaluru: Chaos erupted at Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) after IndiGo flight 6E 5150, bound for Mumbai, was repeatedly delayed and ultimately cancelled, leaving around 100 passengers stranded overnight. The incident highlights the ongoing country-wide operational disruptions affecting the airline, largely due to the implementation of new Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) norms for crew.

The flight was initially scheduled for 9:25 PM on Tuesday but was first postponed to 11:40 PM, then midnight, before being cancelled around 3:00 AM. Passengers expressed frustration over last-minute communication and the lack of clarity, with elderly and ailing travellers particularly affected. “Though the airline arranged food, there was no proper communication, leaving us confused,” said one family member.

An IndiGo executive at MIA cited the FDTL rules, designed to prevent pilot fatigue by limiting crew working hours, as the cause of the cancellation. While alternative arrangements, including hotel stays, were offered, about 100 passengers chose to remain at the airport, creating tension. A replacement flight was arranged but also faced delays due to the same constraints, finally departing for Mumbai around 1:45 PM on Wednesday. Passengers either flew, requested refunds, or postponed their travel.

The Mangaluru delay is part of a broader crisis for IndiGo. The airline has been forced to make “calibrated schedule adjustments”—a euphemism for widespread cancellations and delays—after stricter FDTL norms came into effect on November 1.

While an IndiGo spokesperson acknowledged unavoidable flight disruptions due to technology issues, operational requirements, and the updated crew rostering rules, the DGCA has intervened, summoning senior airline officials to explain the chaos and outline corrective measures.

The ripple effect has been felt across the country, with major hubs like Bengaluru and Mumbai reporting numerous cancellations. The Mangaluru incident underscores the systemic operational strain currently confronting India’s largest carrier, leaving passengers nationwide grappling with uncertainty and delays.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.
