June 11, 2015

Mysuru, Jun 11: Seetharam, a youth from Bihar who suffered severe injuries following the suspected mobile phone blast at Kadabahalli, in neighbouring?Mandya district, is underaged. His actual age was fabricated, only to avoid legal hassles, according to his father?Pundev.

Mobile blast
Pundev told Deccan Herald, “My son was 15 when he was offered job by the contractor (at Manjunatha Engineering and Constructions), who had bagged the project of L&T?toll plaza at Kadabahalli. It was at the insistence of the contractor, his age was shown as 18. He will soon turn 16. Most importantly, Seetharam was quick at job and the lure of earning double, including my wages, forced me to agree to it. Now, we have been betrayed by the same contractor, who planned attacks only to silence us.”

Pundev gives an voluminous account of his son’s condition - restricted to bed, always in sleeping position only to avoid drooling. The moment he gets up, the saliva begins to flow and he has to wipe the same...

Seetharam, though unable to speak, conveys that he wants to study further, after his full recovery. However, neither he nor his parents are aware when will that day come.

Ask Seetharam about that ill-fated day, and he gestures how the cellphone exploded soon after he fixed the socket of the charger to the phone. His mother Rani Devi intervenes to add, how an engineer owing allegiance to the contractor took away that damaged pieces of the cellphone along with its purchase bill and their belongings kept in a trunk, mostly fearing future consequences.

Following the intervention of the State Legal Services Authority, Seetharam was admitted to KR?Hospital in Mysuru on?Tuesday.?He has been currently admitted at ward four of new surgical block, the stone building at the hospital coming under Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMC?and RI). When contacted,?Superintendent of K?R?Hospital Dr?B?G?Sagar said: “A team of doctors from the hospital has evaluated his condition. A report is expected in a day or two to continue with his treatment.”

Seetharam, the eldest son of?Pundev and?Rani?Devi couple from Bihar, was contributing to the family purse till the mishap on February 3.

Initially treated at Adhichunchanagiri Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) at Nagamangala in Mandya, he was referred to JSS?Hospital in Mysuru for further treatment on February 4. He underwent multiple surgeries, during the course of which his damaged nose, tongue, upper and lower jaws were reconstructed through plastic surgery.

Seetharam was discharged from the hospital on June 6, citing medical reasons, especially fear of infection due to the multiple surgeries.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru: Chaos erupted at Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) after IndiGo flight 6E 5150, bound for Mumbai, was repeatedly delayed and ultimately cancelled, leaving around 100 passengers stranded overnight. The incident highlights the ongoing country-wide operational disruptions affecting the airline, largely due to the implementation of new Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) norms for crew.

The flight was initially scheduled for 9:25 PM on Tuesday but was first postponed to 11:40 PM, then midnight, before being cancelled around 3:00 AM. Passengers expressed frustration over last-minute communication and the lack of clarity, with elderly and ailing travellers particularly affected. “Though the airline arranged food, there was no proper communication, leaving us confused,” said one family member.

An IndiGo executive at MIA cited the FDTL rules, designed to prevent pilot fatigue by limiting crew working hours, as the cause of the cancellation. While alternative arrangements, including hotel stays, were offered, about 100 passengers chose to remain at the airport, creating tension. A replacement flight was arranged but also faced delays due to the same constraints, finally departing for Mumbai around 1:45 PM on Wednesday. Passengers either flew, requested refunds, or postponed their travel.

The Mangaluru delay is part of a broader crisis for IndiGo. The airline has been forced to make “calibrated schedule adjustments”—a euphemism for widespread cancellations and delays—after stricter FDTL norms came into effect on November 1.

While an IndiGo spokesperson acknowledged unavoidable flight disruptions due to technology issues, operational requirements, and the updated crew rostering rules, the DGCA has intervened, summoning senior airline officials to explain the chaos and outline corrective measures.

The ripple effect has been felt across the country, with major hubs like Bengaluru and Mumbai reporting numerous cancellations. The Mangaluru incident underscores the systemic operational strain currently confronting India’s largest carrier, leaving passengers nationwide grappling with uncertainty and delays.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
