Mangalore, Sep 4: Owing to the recent monsoon showers in Dakshina Kannada district, 782 kilometres of road, 50 bridge sewers, a vented dam, 20 government buildings, 5052 electric appliances have been damaged, putting the loss due to damages at over Rs 58 crore, said DK deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim.

He said that a stretch of 3,192 metres of the coast had been damaged due to sea erosion, and a proposal had been sent to the government for the sanction of Rs 6.97 lakhs for the re-construction of a temporary seawall.
There was a rainfall of 2,929.79 mm in the district from January to September 2. However, the district received around 3,890 mm rainfall during the period last year in 2013, which means that the district received 15 percent less rainfall this year, informed Joint Director of Agriculture Dr Kempegowda.
With regard to production of paddy in the district, he said that a target of 98,345 metric tonnes had been fixed during monsoons this year.
Deputy Director of Horticulture Department, Dakshina Kannada said that a total of 131 crops in 46.79 acres in the district had been damaged due to the monsoons, which resulted in a loss of Rs 70.63 lakhs.
Additional DC Sadashiv Prabhu said that about 55 residences had been damaged because of heavy rains and compensation of Rs 20.58 lakhs had been distributed to the victims. About 207 houses had been severely damaged and Rs 19.92 lakhs has been distributed as compensation, while an additional 807 houses had been partially damaged and Rs 25.65 lakhs was distributed as compensation, he said.
Hence, a total of 1069 houses had been damaged and a total of Rs 66.15 lakhs had been distributed as compensation, he added.
