Mangalore, Feb 28: Victims affected by Endosulfan were distributed with eligibility certificates of their revised monthly stipend at a programme organised by Dakshina Kannada district administration, zilla panchayat and Department of Health and Family Welfare at Manchi in Bantwal taluk on Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim said that the district had identified a total of 1,815 Endosulfan victims in the district who were eligible to receive monthly stipend from the state government. The distribution to these victims in Bantwal, Mangalore, Puttur and Belthangady taluks will commence within a week, he said.

He said that the High Court had directed the government to distribute a monthly stipend of Rs 3,000 to those who have 60 percent disabilities and Rs 1,500 to those with 40 – 60 percent disabilities. However, in Dakshina Kannada, victims with 40 – 60 percent disabilities will be given Rs 2,000 each as monthly stipend, he said.

He said that the process of identifying Endosulfan victims and identity card distribution programmes would continue in the district. As many as 2,489 victims affected by Endosulfan had been recognized in the district in the first phase. Officials have been directed to conduct a re-survey in areas where people raise complaints and identify victims, who were left out in the previous surveys, he said.

He said that the district administration was contemplating on extending the benefits of 'Anna Bhagya' scheme, the distribution of rice at Re 1 per kg to BPL card holders, to families of suspected endosulfan victims in the district. A proposal has been sent to the state government in this regard, he said.

Endosulfan victims' rehabilitation district nodal officer Arun Kumar said that an additional two mobile health units would be introduced to provide healthcare to victims at their doorsteps. “We have four mobile health units operational in the district and two more will be added soon,” he said.

Endosulfan Virodhi Horata Samithi president Mohammed Peer said that many genuine victims of Endosulfan with disabilities, had been left out in several villages in the district. “A re-survey should be conducted to identify the genuine victims and permanent healthcare centres should be set up in each taluk. Permanent centres will help victims to recover themselves on a large scale,” he added.

District in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai distributed stipend eligibility certificates to suspected Endosulfan victims of Bantwal taluk on the occasion. District health officer H S Shivakumar was present.

Udupi: A 40-year-old NRI from Udupi has reportedly lost more than Rs 12.25 lakh in an online investment scam operated through Telegram.

According to a complaint filed at the CEN police station, Leo Jerome Mendonsa, who has been working in Dubai for the past 15 years in computer accessories sales, maintains NRI accounts in Karkala and Nitte.

On November 12, 2025, Mendonsa was added to a Telegram group called Instaflow Earnings by unknown individuals. Users identified as Priya and Dipannita persuaded him to invest in “Revenue Tasks.” Initially, Mendonsa transferred Rs 1,100 multiple times and received the promised returns, encouraging him to continue.

On November 14, another user, Nishmitha Shetty, directed him to register on a website, digitvisionuoce.cc, and invest Rs 4 lakh in various shares. Over the next few days, he made multiple transfers totaling Rs 12,25,000, including Rs 50,000 via Google Pay, believing the scheme was legitimate.

After receiving the money, the alleged handlers stopped responding, and neither the invested amount nor the promised profits were returned.

The CEN police have registered a case under Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the IT Act and Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and investigations are ongoing.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
