Mangaluru, Jan 15: The coastal city of Mangaluru witnessed a historic event as a sea of humanity converged at the Shah Gardan Maidan in Adyar-Kannur to register their protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR) besides the “categorical mistreatment” of Muslim community at the hands of the police across the country including in Mangaluru.

The protest is jointly being organised by the various Muslim organisations of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district under the leadership of Muslim Central Committee.

The main staged is named after Shaheed Jaleel Kudroli and Shaheed Nausheen, who were ruthlessly gunned down by the police during a chaos that erupted on December 19 in the city due to police batten charge against people during a minor protest against NRC.

Even thought the police had banned public transport and blocked the highway to reduce the number of protesters, around one-and-a-half lakh people had reached the venue when the historic meeting commenced at 2:30 p.m. By 4 p.m. the number of protesters crossed 2 lakh, according to the organisers.

Both sides of the highway were filled with those who came to witness the rally and traffic went haywire along a five-kilometre stretch of the road. The people who took part in the rally were seen waving national flags.

The protest rally was inaugurated by Udupi Khazi Bekal Ibrahim Musliyar. Dua was offered by Dakshina Kannada Khazi Twaka Ahmed Musliyar.

Addressing the protesters, former IAS officer and activist Kannan Gopinathan alleged that the Centre wants to create fear among all sections of people and silence them. Society began to protest when the government crossed the limits and put curbs on democratic freedom, he claimed.

The Centre thought that they can get away with CAA and NRC. However, people have realised the truth and have started coming out onto the streets, Gopinathan added.

Activist Harsh Mander said the theme of the protest against the CAA and NRC is "national flag in one hand, Constitution is another and people will march forward with love in their hearts”.

“The fight against NRC is the fight for the protection of our Constitution. The BJP is using NRC as a weapon to divide the people after Article 370 and Ram Mandir construction," he said and warned the Centre: “The more you try to divide us, the stronger and united we’ll be”

Human rights activist Shivasundar said the "chowkidar" appointed by the people is now asking them whether they are the real owners of their houses.

The BJP only delivered hollow promises which is evident from the rising unemployment, fall in GDP, farmers suicides and the economic slowdown, he alleged.

MLA UT Khader, MLC BM Farooq, former MLA Mohiyuddin Bava, Muslim central committee president KS Mohammed Masood, Ullal Qazi Fazal Koyamma Tangal, Dakshina Kannada district Wakf committee president UK Monu Kanachur, Sunni Youth Federation state general secretary Abdul Rashid Zaini and Karnataka Samastha Mushavara state secretary UK Abdul Aziz Darimi were present among others.

Bengaluru, Sept 22: In a bid to dig deep into the drug mafia's roots in the state, the Internal Security Division of the Karnataka Police had till Tuesday interrogated more than 67 persons. They include Kannada actor, Yogesh, known as Loose Maada, and cricketer and brother of noted film actress Prema, N. C. Aiyappa who were questioned on Monday.

On Tuesday, the ISD also summoned TV stars Abhishek Das and Geeta Bhat.

Speaking to news agency, ISD ADGP Bhaskar Rao said, "Our angle of investigation is entirely different from that of the ongoing investigations by the Bengaluru police. We are looking into aspects of whether this has drugs-hawala-terrorist links."

He added that the ISD had interrogated more than 67 persons so far including actors, TV stars and others. "Our jurisdiction is the entire state and we need to keep track of these events in order to keep track of so many issues. Be it hawala, drug mafia besides terrorist links," he explained.

The department has served notices to several small screen stars. It is confirmed that the drugs scandal also involves people from television and several actors and actresses from this field have been served with notices asking them to be present for questioning.

Actor Yogesh and an employee of a private TV channel were questioned on Monday, it is learnt. Yogesh, as per sources, was addicted to some substances when his opportunities started dwindling several years back but he claimed that he does not have any contact with any drug peddler now.

It is being said that Loose Maada and actress Ragini are friends and have attended some parties together. Two TV artistes, Abhishek and Geetha, have been asked to be present for enquiry on Tuesday.

It is said that cricketer Aiyappa, brother of actress Prema and a small screen actress from Kodagu were questioned by ISD officials on September 19 from morning to evening.

Meanwhile, whistleblower Director Indrajit Lankesh has demanded the handing over of the drugs case to the Central Bureau of Investigation for a proper probe.

farmer-protest-karnataka-pti-892523-1600962145.jpg

Bengaluru, Sept 24: Movement of goods and passengers will be affected in parts of the state on Friday as several farmers’ groups have called for blocking of all the state and national highways to protest against the state and central governments’ move to amend key legislations, including Land Reforms Act and the APMC Act.

Under the banner of Raita, Dalita, Karmikara Aikya Horata several organisations have called for blocking all the state and national highways on Friday, to coincide with the countrywide bandh by the Bharatiya Kisan Union and others.

Farmers in Karnataka had deferred the decision on the strike as they expected the state government to listen to their demands. As the government tabled the bill to amend APMC Act on Wednesday afternoon, a call has been given for a state bandh on Monday.

On Friday, protests will take place across the districts under the banner of Aikya Horata even as the Kodihalli Chandrashekhar-led association has decided to limit itself to the large protest at Mysore Bank circle.

Karnataka Rajya Raita Sangha and Hasiru Sene state president Badagalpura Nagendra said Mysuru, Mandya, Chikkaballapur, Kolar, Mangaluru, Hubballi and Dhawad are some of the districts where the protest and road blockage is expected to be total. “Some parts of Bengaluru will be affected. Our main focus is on the Monday bandh. Tomorrow, we are protesting in support of a nationwide bandh,” he said.

Some districts may not see major impacts as one of the associations has stayed away. However, a member of the Aikya forum said the Monday bandh will be total.

Bus operations to be normal

Officials said there will be no change in operations of buses, including city, suburban and inter-city services, either in Bengaluru and outside. Decisions to cancel services will be taken based on the prevailing situation.

While officials in BMTC said normal operations will continue on Friday, KSRTC officials said officials at its divisions have been put on alert. “We have issued directions to all divisional controllers to ensure road deviations and smooth operation of services. They have been told to stay in touch with police authorities,” an official said.

Mangaluru, Sept 24: Reports are doing rounds that sandalwood actress and Kannada television host Anushree has been summoned by the Mangaluru Central Crime Branch as part of an escalating probe into the state-wide drugs scandal.

If reports are to be believed, Mangaluru CCB today sent a notice to Anushree through Whatsapp to appear for interrogation. Further details regarding the date of investigation are awaited.

Reports also claimed that Anushree's summons are based on the investigation of Bollywood dancer and choreographer Kishore Shetty.

Kishore was arrested by the CCB Mangaluru on September 19 for allegedly possessing drugs. It was reported that Kishore Shetty consumed synthetic drugs and had been arrested by the CCB sleuths after they received information about the same. According to reports, Kishore has revealed that Anushree used to be a part of a few parties.

However, Anushree confirmed to a regional news channel that she has not received any notice from the Mangaluru CCB as of now. She also mentioned that she is deeply hurt and disheartened by such kind of news.

Anushree is one of the highest-paid anchors of Kannada television, reports suggest. She has been given a tough competition to her contemporaries in the showbiz world. In Kannada TV with more number of male anchors, Anushree has won the hearts of millions with her on-screen persona and style of hosting.
