Bengaluru, Aug 12: An M.Tech student allegedly jumped to death from the 7th floor of the hostel building inside the premises of International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore (IIIT-B) in Electronics City on Friday.

The victim has been identified as Goluguri Sai Sarat (21), a seventh-semester computer science student hailing from Hyderabad. He is the second son of Kodandarama Reddy, an income tax official, and Sudha Rani, a homemaker. His elder brother, Sathya Raviteja, is studying in the US.

Sarat did not leave behind a suicide note and neither friends nor family were able to offer a reason for his action. He had also erased all incoming and outgoing call numbers from his mobile phone.

Electronic City police said Sarat jumped off the building around 4.50am after returning from a friend's birthday party. "Tapan Bora, a security guard, heard a loud noise and rushed to the spot. To his shock, Bora found Sarat in a pool of blood. His hands and legs were broken and there were severe injuries on his head," said a police officer. "According to doctors, Sarat died instantly".

Police have seized Sarat's mobile phone and will scan call records. "We will get his call detail record (CDR) to find out who he was in regular contact with and to whom his last calls were made," a police officer said.

Hours before his death, police said, Sarat had accompanied 11 friends to a restaurant in BTM Layout to celebrate the birthday of a classmate, Rahul, who was also from Hyderabad. "He went to BTM Layout with his friends around 6pm and after celebrating the party, all of them returned to the hostel by 10.15pm," one of Sarat's hostel mates told police. "Sarat's friends said he was normal during the party," said a police officer.

Rahul said he was clueless about why Sarat had decided to do something so drastic. "Early morning, I received a call from my friends asking me to come down. I was shocked to see Sarat dead," Rahul said. Another friend recalled seeing Sarat settle down in his chair around 11.30pm. No one knows what happened after that.

"I don't know the reason behind his extreme step. He did not disclose anything to me. He had no issues and was happy," Sarat's father Kodandarama Reddy said. Informed by the institute's registrar, Reddy and his wife flew down to Bengaluru. Sarat's mother said his last call to her was on Wednesday. He told her that he would be with Rahul on his birthday. "I did not receive any call from Sarat on Thursday," she said. Electronic City police said that they had registered a case of unnatural death.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
