Kolkata, Sept 25: Mukul Roy, once a close aide of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has announced that he will resign from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) party. He added that he will resign from Rajya Sabha after the festival of Durga Puja comes to a close.

Roy said, "With a heavy heart, I quit from the party." He added that he will provide his reasons only when he resigns after the Durga Puja which ends on September 30.

Since the Durga Puja fervour is very important to the people of Bengal and everybody is in a festive mood, I will disclose my reasons later when I submit my resignation, said Roy.

Media reports of a strained relationship between Mukul Roy and the party were doing the rounds as he was reported to have contacts with central BJP leaders. Roy, who was considered second in chief after Mamata Banerjee in the party was stripped of all vital posts in the past few months.

On September 17, Mukul Roy was removed from the position of the national vice-president of the Trinamool Congress party when the party restructured its internal committee. Earlier, he was also removed from the parliamentary standing committee on transport, tourism and culture.

Roy, who was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in March had another 8 months for his tenure to end. However, his announcement would lead to an abrupt vacancy in the Rajya Sabha.

Earlier this month, West Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh had called him a "noted leader" and said that if he wishes to join BJP, his membership would be considered by the national leadership of the party.

KCF, a global socio-cultural organisation of Karnataka expatriates, is actively involved in education, humanitarian initiatives and community well-being across several countries. The awardees were selected following a structured evaluation of nominations by the Annual Council Program Committee, based on the depth, consistency and long-term impact of their social service.

One of the award recipients, Abdul Razak Haji, a prominent UAE-based entrepreneur from the Qamcon Group of Companies, was honoured for his significant contributions to society. The second award was conferred on Latheef Kakkinje, a young social worker based in Abu Dhabi, in recognition of his active involvement in community engagement programmes, sports initiatives, talent festivals and family-oriented social activities. His consistent volunteering efforts and commitment to humanitarian causes were highly appreciated by the selection committee.

The award presentation ceremony for Latheef Kakkinje was held at the Zayed Cricket Stadium (Astro Turf Ground) in the presence of Kedumbady Ibrahim Saqafi, President of KCF UAE; Ibrahim, General Secretary; Kabeer Bayambady, President of KCF Abu Dhabi; Ummer Ishwaramangila, General Secretary; along with other members of the KCF Abu Dhabi cabinet.
