
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Mr Poojary said that all the 1,580 villages in the Western Ghats region should be safeguarded as ecologically sensitive without any objection, which will help in protecting the forest cover in the region. Identifying only 850 villages as sensitive and exempting the remaining villages is unfair. The villages whose people have looked after the forests from harm and decline, should not be exterminated, he said.
Speaking on the Niddodi mega power plant proposed to be set up by the state government in Udupi, he had that as long as the local residents of the region opposed the power plant, he would not allow it to be set up in Niddodi, during the rule of any government.
“These issues need to be strongly represented in the Parliament. We need someone who will raise their voice on these issues in the Parliament,” he said, adding that it will be known on May 16 whom the people of Niddodi had chosen to represent them.
