Mangalore, Aug 14: Due to the rise in malpractices related to passport applications in Mangalore Commissionerate limits over a couple of years, the police department has made the process of police verification much more stringent in the last year.

In 2014, around 11,800 passport applications had been submitted at the regional passport office in Mangalore, out of which 89 applications were rejected due to several reasons which included incorrect proof of residential address and criminal background, according to the home department.
To check malpractices such as providing an incorrect residential address or a different one, the process of verification of address was made stricter. Earlier, the passport applicant had to visit the concerned police station along with ID proof and address proof.
The procedure currently in place concerns the applicant visiting the police station along with two neighbours to corroborate the submitted proof of residential address. Moreover, to prevent malpractice, it is required for the police personnel during verification to visit the residence of the applicant and take a photograph of the residence together with the applicant. The photograph will then be filed and details of the verification will be recorded.
The police department has said that there were no objections from the people regarding the change in procedure of passport verification. Due to the new procedure, there has been a visible decrease in the malpractices in passport applications, say passport officials.
However, few applicants feel that the new procedure was a harassment to the neighbours and was unnecessary.
