Mangaluru, Nov 8: A 40 acre land has been identified in Konaje village on the outskirts of the city to build a prison with necessary facilities, according to Karnataka Home Minister Dr G Parameshawar.
Speaking to media persons on Sunday during his first visit to the coastal city after assuming office, the minister said that he would urge the chief minister Siddaramaiah, who also holds finance portfolio to earmark certain amount for the construction of new prison for Dakshina Kannada.
Dr Parameshwar, who before addressing the press paid a visit to the District Prison, wherein two under-trials including Madoor Isubu were hacked to death by fellow inmates on November 2, said that the construction of a new prison is inevitable as the present one lacks space and facilities.
He said that as part of immediate security measures in the wake of recent double murder and recovery of weapons from the jail, Karnataka State Industrial Security Force (KSISF) personnel will be deployed within a few days, besides installation of CCTV cams and mobile jammers.
The minister said that the government is planning amend the jail manual as per the demands of the current situation. “Present jail manual is very old, of the British era. We need to amend it to address current challenges,” he said.
Pointing out that the present jail manual does not allow cops to enter inside the prison, he said that this is also a security challenge.
