Newlywed man, girl drown in temple well

Mandya, May 19: In a gut-wrenching tragedy a 16-year-old girl and a 25-year-old man drowned in kalyani', a step well, at Chaluvanarayanaswamy temple at Melkote in Mandya on Sunday.

The deceased have been identified as Ravikumar, a resident of Kamalapur Layout in Hassan and his relative Soumya.

Ravikumar, who married Ranjitha from Channapatna Layout four days ago, had come for the wedding feast at the bride's house in Melkote.

On Sunday morning, the couple, along with Soumya, had come to the Kalyani' to take bath when the mishap took place. Soumya stepped into the water, slipped and drowned. Ravikumar who rushed to her rescue also drowned.

Ranjitha who was sitting on the steps of the well cried for help on seeing the two drown. However, the two had died even before the passersby rushed to their rescue.

Legislator K S Puttannaiah, who met the family of the deceased, promised an ex gratia of Rs 1 lakh each from the chief minister's fund. He also directed the temple authorities to ensure safety of devotees at the water body.
