Mangaluru, Aug 12: Condemning the violence in Bengaluru, Mangaluru MLA and former minister U T Khader demanded that the police should initiate action against those who posted derogatory remarks against a religion.

In a twitter post he wrote that "Stringent action should be initiated against those who post derogatory remarks on Prophet Mohammed who had upheld equality, humanity and harmony. However, in the name of derogatory remarks, it was not right to take law into hands and damage the public property. Such incidents cannot be accepted."

"Setting fire is not our culture. All should respect the law of the land and settle the issue legally", he further tweeted.

Bengaluru, Sept 15: Sharing pictures of Revenue Minister R Ashoka with an accused in a drugs case, the Congress in Karnataka said there is a need for leaders from the ruling BJP, who are making allegations against those from other parties, to face the inquiry first.

In a tweet, the state Congress said: "The pictures of R Ashoka with drugs scandal kingpin Rahul Thonshe suggests that it was not a casual meeting, but a close association. There is a need for leaders from the ruling BJP, who are making allegations against those from other parties to cover up their scandals, to be made to face inquiry first."

In the pictures shared along with the tweet, R Ashoka can be seen posing for a picture with Rahul Thonshe along with others at some function.

There are also pictures showing the two sharing sweets with each other.

The Minister had on Monday denied any links with Rahul Thonshe. "I had gone to a naming ceremony function relating to a party worker in my constituency, when a celebrity goes to such events normally several people take such pictures.... it is common such pictures are taken during public functions, so can we be linked? If I had gone to his house it is a different thing," he said.

Mr Ashoka said the photo might have been taken some four years ago and since the coronavirus outbreak, he had not attended any such events recently.

Earlier, Congress MLA Zameer Ahmed Khan's name has been linked to the drugs case, following his photos with one Shaik Fazil, who is linked to a casino in Colombo where allegedly such activities take place, emerged.

Mr Khan, who has denied his involvement, has said he knew Shaik Faizal like several other people, but was unaware of his activities.

Udupi, Sept 26: A huge crack has appeared on the newly built bridge across River Souparnika at Arate village in Kundapur taluk of Udupi. According to eyewitnesses, broken steel rods were visible through the gap.

After the construction of the new bridge, vehicles travelling from Byndoor to Kundapura were allowed to travel on the new bridge and those travelling from Kundapur to Byndoor on the old bridge. In the wake of the cracks on the new bridge, two-way traffic has now been arranged on the old bridge.

“Kundapura police restricted vehicular movement on the new bridge (carriageway from Karwar to Udupi) and diverted the vehicles on the old bridge at Arate-Hosadu,” said Police Inspector Gopikrishna.

The nearly 1-km-long bridge was built during the four-lane work of national highway 66 between Kundapura and Goa border.

IRB West Coast Tollway Pvt. Ltd., a subsidiary of IRB Infrastructure that undertook the project in 2014 on BOOT basis, is yet to complete the four-lane work.

Residents along the highway stretch had been alleging substandard work in the execution of the project from the very beginning.

It was in 2011 that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) proposed the widening and upgrading of the existing NH 17 (renaming it as NH-66). It was meant to reduce traffic, fuel consumption and accidents, and save time.

It was also claimed that the construction of the highway would bring development in all areas it passed through and led to economic growth of the region.
