Mangalore, March 5: The state government proposed 'Paschimavahini project' which intends to inter-connect west flown rivers in Dakshina Kannada has been opposed by Congress leader Vijaya Kumar Shetty.
Addressing media persons at Press Club here on Saturday, Shetty, Former Surathkal MLA, said there are many environmental hazards in the inter-linking of rivers. Everyone should oppose the project because the project will affect the biodiversity of the district extensively, he said.
He said that though Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade had opposed the project, the state government did not pay heed to his plea. “We have again met Dr Heggade requesting to lead the collective movement against the proposed project,” he said.
Shetty said the project has far-reaching impact on ecology and environment of the sensitive Western Ghats as well as adverse affects on the agricultural and drinking water needs of Dakshina Kannada district.
The government is ready to provide water to far away districts like Bangalore City and Rural, Chickballapur, Kolar, Doddaballapur and Thumkur completely neglecting the interest of Dakshina Kannada people.
With the growing population ratio, the need for water is also increasing in the same proportion. There is a need to send the message “Our Nethravthi River is not for sale” to the government immediately, he said.
