Vijaya College Principal dies in accident

Mulki, March 7: Two persons, including the Principal of Vijaya College Mulki near Mangalore, were killed on the spot in a head-on collision between a multi-utility vehicle (MUV) and a bus at Nagathihalli near Nagamangala in Mandya district on Sunday.

Principal Arvind Joshi (54) and car driver Vijay Kumar (30) were killed and 12 others sustained injuries when they were heading towards Mangalore after attending a programme in a college in Bangalore.

College sources said that Prof Joshi had been on a tour to Mysore and Bangalore to attend programmes aimed to strengthen the College's alumni association.

Prof Joshi is survived by his wife Vanita Joshi who is also a lecturer, and two daughters.

Roshankumar, Surendrakumar and Nagaraj Naik, all in the MUV and nine passengers of the mini bus were injured in the accident. They were treated at A C Giri Hospital in Nagamangala.

Mangaluru: Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy C H has warned of strict action against individuals spreading rumours and attempting to create insecurity within the Muslim community and fuel hatred between Hindus and Muslims through social media.

Referring to a recent social media post alleging that police personnel had entered a masjid premises to check whether beef was being cooked, the commissioner said miscreants were attempting to push their communal agenda. 

“A group of people, both from Mangaluru and abroad, are trying hard to spread rumours. For the past 10 days, they have been attempting to rake up old issues, highlight routine matters as controversies, or fabricate news altogether,” he said.

He reiterated that any such attempts to disturb communal harmony would invite legal action. “Cases will be registered and the accused will be brought to book,” he stated.
