Mangalore, June 25: With the intervention of a Bharatiya Janata Party leader, the two quarrelling factions of a group of Muslims, who identify themselves as 'Sunnis' have decided to forget their decades-old rivalry and unite.

After AP Aboobakar, popularly known as AP Usthad, was ousted from a 'Sunni' group led by EK Aboobakar several years ago for his alleged misdeeds, the entire organisation had split into two factions. The rivalry, which erupted in neighbouring Kerala between 'AP group' and 'EK group' had extended to undivided Dakshina Kannada too.

Senior BJP leader and Chairman of State Minority Commission Anwar Manippady on Saturday officially declared in a press meet at Circuit house in the presence of Mangalore Qazi Thwaqa Ahmed Musliyar, Udupi Qazi Bekal Ibrahim Musliyar and Athradi Qazi Aboobaker Musliyar, that the rivalry between two factions will be subsided soon as a new forum called 'Sunni Muslim Jamath Okkoota', comprising mullahs of both groups, has come into existence under his leadership in the region.

Mr Manippady said that he has succeeded in the process of compromise between the leaders of both 'AP' and 'EK' groups through negotiations.

He said that main intention behind the formation of new Okkoota was regrouping the activists of both groups under a single banner.

He said that due to misconceptions and misunderstandings both groups had indulged in mudslinging at each other despite the 'religious stance' of the both groups was the same.

He said his 'historical effort' is a milestone in the history of both the groups and the other members have unanimously selected him as President of Okkoota.

He also said that he would strive to bring other Islamic organisations such as Jama'th-e-Islami Hind and Ahl-e-Hadees under one banner.

The directors of the Okkoota are Ullal Assistant Qazi Koora Fazal Koyamma Thangal, Mangalore Qazi Thwaqa Ahmed Musliyar, Udupi Qazi Bekal Ibrahim Musliyar and Athradi Qazi Aboobaker Musliyar.

He said 17 members each from the both groups have been appointed for the executive committee of the Okkootta. They are HI Aboosufiyan Madani, SP Hamza Saqafi, MSM Abdul Rasheed Zaini, NKM Shafi Sa'adi, NM Abdul Rahamad Madani, TM Muhyuddin Kamil Saqafi, Majur Aboobaker Sa'adi, BM Mumthaz Ali, Hyder Parthippady, Ahammad Shakir Haji, UK Hamza Sagar, Meeran Saab Kadaba, Abdul Hameed Bajpe, Hameed Kandak, Ashraf Ullal, UA Khader Haji Ujirebettu, Haji Ibrahim Kodijal, K Mammunchi Sona, Hasan Haji Puttur, Muhammad Haneef, Ashraf (former Mayor), TM Sayeed Sullia, Musthaf Uppinangady, I Moidinabba, Vahid Faizi, KL Abdul Khader Darimi, Umar Darimi, Abdul Latheef Darimi, Rafeeq Kodaje, Isak Thodar, Riyazuddin Bunder, Saleem Handel and MP Moideen.

Resolutions:

1. Both parties should not indulge in mudslinging or criticizing at each other in any conference or convention.

2. The Qazis should advise their followers and the preachers from out of states not to sow the seeds of discord among the groups through hate speeches. This should be followed strictly.

3. Solving the conflicts of mosques managed by Sunni groups in twin districts.

4. The current syllabus of Madrasa education be continued as it was before.

5. All the recognised Madrasas should display the name board of their respective groups which they belong to avoid confusions.

6. Taking extra care to avoid groupism in the management committees of the mosques.

Ban KFD

When asked about his opinion on banning Karnataka Forum for Dignity, Mr Manippady said that he would oppose all the organisations which are against the country and community. He would support state government on banning KFD, he said.

Hyder Parthippady, Ibrahim Kodijal, Ashraf and others were also present at the press meet.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.
