DK seeks Rs 5 crore financial aid to provide rain relief

Mangalore, July 18: As the torrential rains have continued to lash coastal areas of Karnataka causing damages and bringing miseries to people, the Dakshina Kannada district administration has sought immediate financial assistance from the state government.

A media release issued from the district administration on Monday, stated that Deputy Commissioner Dr N S Channappa Gowda has sought Rs 5 crore from the state government to provide relief to people affected by recent spell of heavy rains lashing the district.

The district on an average recorded 1,859.9 mm of rainfall from January 1 to June 18 as against 1,483.5 mm rainfall in the same period last year.

In all, six persons have died due to natural calamity from April 1 to date in the district.

In the last 72 hours ending 8 am on Monday, the district has received heavy rainfall.

The average rainfall in the five taluks on Saturday was 52.8 mm, on Sunday 69.9 mm, and 68.6 mm on Monday.

Highest rainfall of 93.4 mm was recorded in Belthangady on Monday, followed by Bantwal at 63.4 mm, Puttur and Sullia 62.4 mm respectively, and Mangalore 61.2 mm.

Meanwhile, Director-in-charge, Meteorological Centre, Bangalore, has warned the fishermen that strong onshore winds from westerly direction speed occasionally reaching 45-55 kmph likely along off Karnataka coast during next 24 hours.

Dakshina Kannada’s 8-year-old author debuts novel on world stage at Sharjah Book Fair

Sharjah, UAE: Ayisha Basheer Esra, a talented young writer hailing from Aramboor in Dakshina Kannada’s Sullia taluk, marked a significant milestone in her burgeoning literary career with the launch of her debut novel, The Betrayal of the Kingdom, at the Sharjah International Book Fair. The prestigious event, recognized as the world’s largest book fair, provided a fitting stage for the unveiling of Esra’s work.

The official release ceremony was conducted by Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Director of the Religious Affairs Office of the Sharjah Government and a distinguished member of the royal family, underscoring the significance of Esra’s achievement. Mrs. Lini Shivaprasad, Principal of GEMS Millennium School, Sharjah, had the honor of receiving the first copy of the novel.

The event was graced by the presence of numerous distinguished guests, reflecting the widespread recognition of Esra’s literary talent and the anticipation surrounding her debut novel. At the remarkably young age of eight, Esra has already established herself as a prolific writer, authoring and publishing collections of short stories in addition to her newly released full-length novel. Her dedication to writing and her exceptional talent have positioned her as one of the youngest authors to achieve such literary success.

Esra is the daughter of Basheer and Haseena, residents of Aramboor, Sullia, and currently a student at Sharjah’s GEMS Millennium School. Her early accomplishments serve as an inspiration to aspiring young writers and a testament to the power of nurturing creativity from a young age.
