Mangalore, April 17: Expressing concern over the decline in number of females in the district State Child Rights Protection Commission President Nina Nayak said that there is a need to keep an eye on how the scanning machines are used in various hospitals and at the scanning centres.

Holding a meeting with child rights activists, NGOs working in field of education and the government officials, in Mangalore on Tuesday Nayak said that in some states mobile scanning machines have been banned in wake of misuse of the technology to determine sex of the foetus. Responding to this Deputy Commissioner Dr N S Channappa Gowda said that there should be no hassles over imposing ban on mobile scan machines.

However the doctors present at the meet said that mobile scan machines are not used just to scan expectant women but they are very essential in emergency cases and in case the patient is bedridden. The DC said that the ban may be imposed and then response can be collected.

When the issue of sale of new born children was brought up for discussion, the DC said that he was not aware of the same and in case specific cases are brought to his notice, he would be in a position to take action.

The members of medical fraternity present at the meet said that they were not aware of such things happening in the district. However many activists who were present at the meeting affirmed the same with a nod but did not give concrete information on the same.

Child Welfare Committee Chairperson Asha Nayak, CWC members, Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr K N Vijayprakash among others were present.
