Mangalore, June 26: A Muslim boy was allegedly assaulted by members of an organization for being with a girl belonging to Hindu community late on Sunday night.
The boy from Bantwal and the girl, a call centre employee from Shaktinagar, were followed by a group of men, allegedly belonging to a local Hindu outfit, around 8 p.m. into a deserted spot where the Muslim boy was assaulted.
The Mangalore South Police on Monday have arrested four persons in connection with assault.
The arrested are Nishit, Purushotham, Naveen Shetty and Sandip Shetty, all residents of Jeppu.
They were released on bail in the evening.
Earlier, Mangalore City Police Commissioner Sreemant Kumar Singh had said that Sou motu action would be taken against the group of men who were involved in the incident.
He said “Neither the boy nor the girl has registered a complaint, so we are forced to take sou motu action against the group of four or five boys who had beaten him up,”
Pandeshwar police termed the group of boys as “public” who called the police after the seeing the couple. “We dispersed the group and sent the couple home,” said Bharathi, sub-inspector of police, on Sunday night.
However, when media persons had visited the station at 10.30 p.m. on Sunday, the boy was found sitting on the floor in her office.
When asked why the police had not arrested the group of men on Sunday night itself, Mr. Singh said: “When a police gets an assault complaint, it is natural that the victims are rescued. After the safety of the victims is ensured, a case is filed against the attackers.”
He denied that the boy had been intimidated by the police.
