Karwar, June 27: Dozens of angry protesters laid siege to the District Hospital here on Tuesday following the alleged medical negligence which led to the death of a newborn baby.

According to relatives of the victim Geeta Premanand Mahale, a resident of Nandanagadda, in Karwar, had given birth to a child in the hospital on June 18.

Although the newborn appeared normal, the relatives suspected something abnormal on June 21 and informed the Dattatray Raikar, the doctor who, following a check-up, ordered that the child should be shifted to the Goa Medical College.

The relatives said that the baby died on the way to the medical college. It is learnt that the baby died of jaundice.

Ms. Geeta, who was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday, said the child could have been saved if the doctor had diagnosed the disease immediately after the birth.
