Udupi, July 6: In yet another water-tragedy, a student from Poland is feared to have drowned while his friend was rescued after the two went for swimming near Malpe beach in Udupi on Thursday evening.

The victim is 21 year old Milocz Lachowski. According to the police, the four had come to the country on July 1 for a two-month internship programme at Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT). Milocz was part of the undergraduate computer course.

Around 4 p.m. Milocz Lachowski and his Polish friend Marchin Dlubis (21), went for a swim at Tottam Beach, around 0.5 km from Malpe, said the Malpe police.

On seeing the two struggle against the currents, local fishermen rushed to the water, rescuing Marchin. But Milocz drifted away and could not be seen, said the police.

The two Polish students had gone to the beach along with three others: Kinga Bar, from Poland, Marova Maazounl, from Tunisia, and Prasanna, from Madurai, who stayed back on the beach.

“We have contacted the coast guard to trace the body. With the currents being the strongest during the monsoons, there is no way to tell in which direction Milocz drifted,” said Lingaraju, police inspector, Malpe Police Station.
