Bangalore, October 9: A nationwide campaign “Why Popular Front” against 'falsehood being propagated about the organization Popular Front of India' will be conducted from October 10 to November 10, 2012. Various programs will be conducted in Karnataka state under this banner.

Addressing the media person at Bangalore Press Club on Monday Eliyas Muhammad Thumbe, State President of the PFI said, “Popular Front of India is an organization which is marching forward with an aim of all round empowerment of the deprived communities, especially Muslims who are backward in educational, economic, social and political fields. The organization is tirelessly creating awareness among youth, organizing them and striving hard to restore the rights of marginalised and oppressed communities.”

He said “It is undisputed that if a country wants to be respected as a developed nation, each and every section of its citizenry should develop equally and enjoy social justice. If a section or community is side-lined or persecuted, it will be against the welfare of that country besides violating human rights. Hence Popular Front of India is always working with other progressive and Dalit organisations for the purpose of getting fundamental rights, equal opportunities, human rights and social justice to all marginalised communities. “

Abdul Wahid Sait, State Vice President said, “Popular Front of India has taken up lot of social issues related to Muslim community and other marginalized classes of society and conducted many campaigns like “Reservation to Muslims”, “Bail is the Rule : Release the innocents”, “Social Justice Conference”, etc. It has conducted several protests against the pro-imperialistic, pro-capitalistic and anti-people policies of the government, irrespective of the party that they may belong to.

He said "Towards educational empowerment, Popular Front of India has been striving in a systematic manner through its programs and schemes. It has been conducting “School Chalo” campaign every year in all districts of Karnataka. This year, the organization has distributed 1 lakh school kits at an all-India level. It has started a scheme “SarvaShiksha Gram” in which the organization adopts few villages/Mohallas, conduct surveys and provides all educational and financial help to the poor children to get primary education. In Karnataka, 62 Mohallas are selected under the “SarvaShiksha Gram” and benefitted."

He said "Popular Front of India is also actively involved in the field of social service. It has conducted numerous blood donation camps, health camps, fitness and hygiene programs, legal awareness camps, scholarship information camps, etc. It has conducted rescue and rehabilitation activities during Tsunami in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, floods in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, Air-India crash accident in Mangalore and recently done relief activities for Assam victims, etc."

Mangaluru: The passenger vessel service between Lakshadweep and Mangaluru has recommenced operations with the arrival of Parali, a high-speed craft, at the Old Mangaluru Port on Thursday, May 2

With 160 passengers on board, along with a pilot, a ship engineer, an assistant, and eight labourers, the arrival of the vessel brings hopes of reinstating this vital transportation link.

The passengers were welcomed by Congress brass. The vessels that used to arrive before the Covid-19 pandemic took 13 hours to reach Mangaluru from Lakshadweep. However, the introduction of the high-speed craft, Parali, has reduced the travel time to approximately seven hours, said Abubakar Ashraf Bengre.

Bengre is part of a team that has been instrumental in liaising with the authorities of both Lakshadweep and Karnataka to facilitate the revival of this service. He told reporters that the service would bring better economic activity to Mangaluru.

Over recent months, discussions have been held with Hamdullah Sayeed, president, Lakshadweep Congress Committee, as well as Karnataka Speaker UT Khader and district minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, to garner support for the reintroduction of the service.

The passengers who arrived mostly sought medical treatment, went shopping or met relatives here. They said that they traveled for Rs 450. Former MLA J R Lobo said that they will urge the government to ensure regular vessel services continue.

The passenger service was discontinued due to a lack of demand, it is learnt. In the year 2018-19, 4,955 passengers embarked and 7,422 disembarked from the Old Mangaluru Port. Subsequently, the figures declined to 3,779 (embarked) and 2,294 (disembarked) in 2019-20. The numbers further plummeted to 561 (embarked) and 19 (disembarked) in 2020-21, leading to the suspension of the service.

At present, the administration of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep has released a schedule for high-speed craft movement from April 29 to May 5.

Mangaluru: This year too, the Mangaluru International Airport has missed being designated as an embarkation point for the annual hajj pilgrimage.

According to the Haj Committee of India, not many are choosing Mangaluru as an embarkation point. Last year, although Mangaluru was notified as one of the embarkation points, the Union government removed it from the list at the last minute.

Several associations and organisations submitted memorandums to the Haj Committee of India, requesting the reinstatement of Mangaluru as one of the embarkation points, but their efforts have not materialised this year either.

The use of Mangaluru Airport as an embarkation point for the haj began in 2010. In 2019, 1,400 haj pilgrims flew from MIA to Saudi Arabia.

“When the number is less, it is difficult to consider it. It was the same issue as last year,” reacted AP Abdullakutty, chairman of the Haj Committee of India.
Mangaluru as an embarkation point served people from undivided Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Shivamogga, Uttara Kannada, and Chikkamagaluru districts.
Last year, the Muslim Central Committee of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts submitted a memorandum to Abdullakutty. They expressed their disappointment with Abdullakutty and stated that Mangaluru had a good number of applicants ever since it was identified as an embarkation point.
Now, they have to travel to Bengaluru.

UT Khader, speaker of the Karnataka legislative assembly, pointed out that several Union ministries are involved in the process of designating embarkation points for the haj.

“We are not sure why MIA as an embarkation point was removed. Is it because of fewer applications, or are airlines not willing to bid for MIA as an embarkation point? Is it only an issue with MIA as an embarkation point, or are there other airports in the country facing similar issues? We will try to find out and seek answers. Meanwhile, we will also start working at the earliest so that MIA is considered as an embarkation point for hajj next year,” said Khader.

Guwahati: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday condemned the alleged sexual abuse of women involving Lok Sabha MP Prajwal Revanna, asserting that the BJP will not tolerate any insult to women.

Revanna (33) is the BJP-JD(S) alliance candidate for Hassan Lok Sabha constituency, which went to polls on April 26.

Earlier in the day, the JD(S) suspended Revanna from the party with immediate effect.

“The issue regarding Revanna that has been reported in the media is very hurtful and cannot be tolerated in any way,” Shah told a press conference here.

“The BJP’s stand is very clear; we will not tolerate any insult to ‘matri aur nari shakti’ (women empowerment),” he asserted.

Some explicit video clips allegedly involving Prajwal Revanna, the grandson of former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, were circulated in Hassan over the last few days.

The home minister said Congress has been alleging that an NDA partner’s candidate is involved in the incident, “but I just want to ask a small question - whose government is there in that state (Karnataka)?”

“The Congress is in power in Karnataka, and this matter must have come to their attention. Why has it not taken any action on it so far? We cannot take any action as law and order is a state issue,” Shah said.
