Mangalore, October 27: A communal clash broke out among under-trials in Mangalore sub-jail on Friday in which a jail warder was injured.
The injured jail warder has been identified as Puttanna. None of the prisoners sustained major injuries.
According to district jail sources, at around 12.30 pm, special food was provided to the inmates on the eve of Bakrid.
But it was allegedly provided only to Muslim under-trials and not to others.
Enraged over this, other inmates questioned the partiality of the jail authority.
Meanwhile, a quarrel ensued among the two groups and soon one group started throwing stones and pieces of tiles upon the other barrack, which mostly inhabited by Muslim prisoners.
When the warder Puttanna notices this, he rushed to the spot and tried to contain the situation when a stone hit him. It is said that the violence lasted for nearly 45 minutes.
However, timely intervention of police prevented the exacerbation of the situation. No complaint has been lodged at the jurisdictional Barke police station in this regard.
District Jail Superintend P S Ambekar said that Muslim prisoners were allowed to offer special prayers during Eid. “But, when they entered their barrack, some Hindu prisoners pelted stone upon the Muslim group, which led to the quarrel,” he said.
On offering special food only to Muslim under-trials, he rubbished the allegation and said: “It is wrong to assume that the jail authority offers special food to only one group. We provide food to all without any discrimination.”
It is the third such incident in a span of 15 days.
