Mangalore, October 30: Minority fundamentalism is as dangerous as the communalism spread by Hindutva forces and hence, both need to be condemned, said GV Shriram Reddy, Former MLA and State Secretary, CPI(M).

He was speaking after inaugurating a workshop on communalism at Town Hall in Mangalore on Tuesday.

Mr. Reddy said that although it is true that minority fundamentalism has evolved as a response to the communalism and violence spread by the Hindutva forces, both forms of communalism are “dangerous” and must be condemned.

Coming hard at the police department in failing to check the growing communalism menace, Mr. Reddy said that senior police officers even stooped to the level of seeking apology from RSS leaders for taking into custody a Hindutva activist for creating trouble during Bakrid in the state. “The police machinery is being misused by the saffron forces. In spite of one year passing by, no action has been taken against Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat for his hate speech. The SP says that if he is arrested, law and order situation in the region will worsen. Why do we need such a police force if it cannot arrest wrongdoers, which is its duty?” he questioned.

The senior CPI(M) leader said that while BJP is looking to play the communal card to gain the upper hand in the upcoming Assembly elections, Congress and JD(S) have also not made any concrete effort to take on communalism. “The BJP knows that people are fed up of its maladministration. No Chief Minister in the history of Karnataka was put behind bars. But this BJP government tenure saw cabinet ministers and the Chief Minister himself being jailed for corruption and scams. To regain power in the state, they will resort to communal tactics and hence we are witnessing incidents of communal violence across the state. After the Mangalore homestay attack, communal violence has taken place in 17 different places in the state including Belgaum, Koppala, Sindagi, Hubli and Gangavathi. But Congress and JD(S) also have not made any effort to take on communalism. They want to please Hindus as well as maintain their minority vote banks”, he said.

Mr. Reddy also said that the BJP government is encouraging the practice of 'Made Snana' in temples and caste discrimination in Udupi temple. Pejawar Shree Vishwesha Teertha Swamiji is a key orchestrator of communalism in the coastal region, he said.

B Madhava, Sunil Kumar Bajal, and other CPI(M) leaders were present.

Madikeri, May 11: Kodagu police have apprehended the man allegedly responsible for the brutal murder of a minor girl within the confines of Kumbaragadige village in Karnataka's Somwarpet taluk.

Kodagu Superintendent of Police, K Ramarajan, disclosed that the arrested individual is Prakash (32) from Hammiyala village in Somwarpet taluk. However, authorities are still in the process of recovering the severed head of the victim. The perpetrator had absconded with the victim's severed head after committing the crime.

Search operations for the suspect commenced late on Thursday night (May 9), with officials diligently pursuing leads. Acting on information suggesting the suspect's presence in a forested area near the village, the police swiftly moved in and apprehended him.

The victim US Meena, 15, a student of Surlabbi High School, had passed the SSLC examinations, the results of which were announced on May. One same day, she was murdered.

Reportedly, the engagement of the minor girl with the suspect was thwarted by officials from the Women and Child Development department. Subsequently, officials persuaded the girl's parents against proceeding with the marriage.

However, despite these interventions, the suspect forcibly entered her residence during the night, purportedly abducted her, and later perpetrated the heinous crime in a wooded area on the outskirts of the forest, before absconding with her severed head.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday attacked the BJP over the obscene video case in Hassan district by questioning who gave the accused Prajwal Revanna a visa to go abroad. He also hit out at Union Minister Amit Shah asking why did he gave a ticket to Hassan JD(S) MP Prajwal, who is the accused in the sex scandal case.

He alleged that former Prime Minister and JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda planned the escape of his grandson and Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna abroad.

“Who gives passport and visa for travelling abroad? It’s the Centre. Can he go without the Centre’s knowledge? It was former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda who planned and sent him abroad,” the Chief Minister said.

"Prajwal pen drives case is not related to DCM DK Shivakumar. Why did Amit Shah give a ticket to the accused of a sex scandal?" he questioned.

Siddaramaiah also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to direct the Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs to cancel the Diplomatic Passport issued to Prajwal Revanna and ensure his return to face the law.

Prajwal is accused in an alleged sex scandal which is under investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Karnataka government. He is believed to have escaped to Germany shortly after polling in the first phase of elections in the state got over on April 26, in which Prajwal was the JD(S)-BJP combine's candidate from Hassan.

The Karnataka CM said that SIT will conduct an investigation in a transparent manner in the case.

Earlier, Siddaramaiah wrote on X, "The government has decided to form a special investigation team in connection with Prajwal Revanna's obscene video case. Obscene video clips are circulating in Hassan district, where it appears that women have been sexually assaulted."
