Mangalore, November 3: Although BJP has thrown out Former Minister Dhananjay Kumar out of the party and is not happy with the anti-party attitude being displayed by Tumkur MP GS Basavaraj, the case of Former Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa is “different” and all attempts are being made to retain him in the party, said Bhanuprakash, MLC and State Vice President, BJP.

Addressing media persons at a press meet at Sanghaniketan in Mangalore on Saturday, Mr. Bhanuprakash said that the party is unhappy with Mr. Basavaraj for the kind of anti-party statements he has been giving of late. “He came to prominence and won the elections because of the party. But his recent statements are not in good taste. He has spoken ill about the RSS, the ministers in the state cabinet, and even national BJP leaders LK Advani and Nitin Gadkari. The State President must convene a disciplinary meeting soon and send a report to the national leadership informing them about Mr. Basavaraj's anti-party attitude”, he said.

The party had taken action against Dhananjay Kumar on disciplinary grounds too, he said. “The party made him a union minister and MP. But he indulged in hurling of allegations which were far from truth besides making personal comments. There was an attempt to create a divide in the party and hence he has been shown his place”, Mr.Bhanuprakash said.

When asked as to why the party is showing a soft corner towards Mr. Yeddyurappa in spite of his anti-party attitude, Mr.Bhanuprakash said that the Former Chief Minister's case is an exception. “He is different. He commands distinct respect from everyone in the party. His contributions to the party and struggles cannot be undermined. He played a key role in bringing BJP to power in Karnataka. It is the wish of everyone in the party that he remains with the BJP. We have been asked not to comment about him until the final round of talks is held with him by party seniors”, he said.

Responding to a query as to whether Mr. Yeddyurappa's exit from the BJP would hurt its chances in the upcoming Assembly polls, Mr. Bhanuprakash said: “We will not say that the party will not be hurt. Definitely there would be some damage and so is the case when the party loses any of its activists. But we believe that people will identify the achievements of our government as the achievements of BJP rather than identifying them as Mr. Yeddyurappa's achievements”, he said.

Mr. Bhanuprakash said that meetings and workshops to train party activists briefing them about the scams and corruption of the UPA government are being made under the slogan 'Congress Hatao, Desh Bachao' in every Assembly constituency of the state.

'Operation Lotus could have been avoided'

Earlier, speaking at a programme organized at the Sanghaniketan, Yogish Bhat, Deputy Speaker, Karnataka Legislative Assembly, said that had there been cent per cent poll victory in all Assembly constituencies in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, 'Operation Lotus' would not have been needed at all.

“If all candidates in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts had emerged victorious, there would not have been a need to carry out 'Operation Lotus'. Party activists must work with greater enthusiasm and see that BJP wins all seats. We have confidence that we will get a clear majority”, Mr. Bhat said.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.
