Mangalore, November 6: A protest demanding fulfillment of various demands of the construction workers in the state was held in Mangalore on Tuesday under the banner of CITU and Karnataka Rajya Kattada Mattu Ithare Nirmaanakara Federation.
The protest was held as per the nationwide call given by the Construction Workers' Federation of India (CWFI).
Although a union legislation dealing with regulations with regard to construction workers was brought into force in 1996, it has not been implemented in different states of the country. Barring a few services extended by a few states, no attention has been given on issues dealing with security of workers at the construction site, safety, service regulations and health of workers. As a result worker deaths are taking place across the country on a daily basis, the protestors said.
Among the various demands of the construction workers are increase of minimum wages of construction workers to Rs.10,000, reduction of prices of everyday commodities, inclusion of construction workers in BPL category, appointment of chief executive officers in Welfare Boards, bringing into effect the various facilities agreed to be given to workers at the Labour Ministry meeting held on April 3, aid to construct houses for construction workers among others.
CPI(M) leaders B Madhava, BM Bhat, were present besides others.
