Karwar, November 7: The Karwar City Municipal Council (CMC) on Tuesday passed a resolution on solid waste management. The CMC members and officials will not use items made of plastic such as carry bags and cups in functions henceforth.
At its general body meeting, the CMC discussed about disposal of solid waste and biodegradable waste in the city.
Uday Kumar Shetty, Commissioner of the CMC, said Karwar CMC was the first to pass such a resolution in the State. He said that in future, only glass and paper cups would be used in the functions of the CMC. At any function of the CMC, books approved and published by the Kannada and Culture Department would be given to the guests instead of plastic flowers and bouquets, he said.
He said that compost would be made using the waste.
A compost yard near Shirwad on the outskirts of Karwar was coming up at a cost of Rs. 1 crore.
For efficient management of solid waste, people would be asked to segregate waste at the point of collection, the commissioner said.
He urged the people to reduce use of plastic carry bags, cups and bottles.
He hoped that people of Karwar would cooperate with the CMC in keeping the city clean.
At the meeting, some members expressed unhappiness stating that the district administration had neglected the CMC members during the Rajyotsava programme. The members said that many projects of the CMC were pending for want of sand and other material. They objected to inviting new tenders while work on many projects was pending.
The officials briefed the members that Karwar was utilising 1.7 tmcft of water from the Gangavali river. A project to build window dams across the river had been taken up at a cost of Rs. 46 crore by the government. Of the project cost, the CMC had to pay Rs. 7 crore.
Ganapati Ulvekar, CMC president, and Nayana Malsekar, vice-president, were among those present.
