Fight Against Cancer

The tentacles of dreaded decease like cancer is past spreading its control across the world, killing millions across the globe. Even among educated there is little awareness about cancer; mainly its risk factors and early symptoms. There is more fear than knowledge. Cancer is a major health hazard today, not only killing millions of people but also bringing in lots of suffering to the patients and their families; not to mention the economic burden. Once advanced cancer needs expensive treatments like surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy which at times are beyond the reach of ordinary people in our region.

In line with Rotary District 3180 project – 'Cancer detection' - Rotary Club of Mangalore Sunrise has pledged to spread awareness about cancer. In this effort, they have the tacit support of other Rotary clubs, prominent medical institutions, media forums and corporate companies in the city, under a campaign called – 'Fight Against Cancer'.

Under the leadership of Dr Shivashankar Bhat Angri, president, who himself is a laparoscopic surgeon, the Club members have identified a few modalities in this direction. Dr Bhat will be assisted by members including eight well known physicians who are the members of the club. He has plans to co-opt members of medical fraternity from other clubs and institutions in this campaign which is going to make a difference to the region.

Says Dr Shivashakar Angri – “Ever since I took over the position of presidency, it was my endeavor to take on this deadly monster as the whole region is succumbing to its assault. It requires a great deal of commitment to counter this menace, in the form of awareness and prevention. I believe our club which has highly qualified professionals – including highly placed specialist doctors – is in a better position to lead this campaign from the front, while we invite other likeminded people to come and join us. Dr Shivashankar Angri has plans to convene a meeting of eminent physicians, executives from the corporate companies, members from media and civic society to form a 'consultative committee' to assist him in this campaign.

Gaata Rahe Mera Dil – the show

The musical troupe will be headed by Anitha D'Souza, a well known singer who sings in 8 languages. A trained singer and dancer, Anitha has been felicitated by her fans in India and abroad by bestowing such titles as 'Tulunada Gaana Kogile' and 'Gadinada Gana Kogile'.

Srikant Kamath, the tall and handsome singer who is well known for his soft romantic numbers, whose voice suits the original singers be it Manna De, Kishore Kumar, Mohd Rafi, Mukesh or Kumar Sanu. Mohammed Hanif (known as Junior Rafi) is equally famous for oratory skills and strong stage presence. Ranjandas, who is known as junior Kishore Kumar of the South is equally stunning and graceful.

The troupe has widely travelled around India and abroad, regaling the audience. Some of their popular shows are – “Golden Oldies” – in Dubai, the Musical Extravaganza in Dubai, The Melody Makers by Tulu Koota in Kuwait, The Musical Show by Anitha and Srikant in Bahrain. The troupe for the past three years has organized musical shows at Town Hall, the latest being 'Yaadon ki Baarat' on August 26 which was a successful show enjoyed by people of all communities. Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.
